Principal’s Message
As we approach the hustle and bustle of the season, take time express the joy, peace, love, and hope of this holiday in your day to day activities. I hope all of our families have a fantastic break filled with the wonder and awe of the season. Now more than ever we need to lead the way with love and appreciation for each other and the blessings that are in our lives. I continue to be blessed by my Baby Ben family and wish everyone all the joys of this wonder filled time and the very best for the coming New Year. Our students return January 9th. This year they will have a whole week after the New Year begins at home. Please make sure they are using their time wisely and spend time each day on academics and our online programs: IXL, Kid/ Teen Biz to keep their minds sharp. This is also a good time to take advantage of all our great city has to offer. The more historical and cultural experiences our students have, the better students they will be!

Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa celebrates the seven principles of Nguzo Saba (the seven principles of African Heritage). These seven principles comprise Kawaida, a Swahili term for tradition and reason. Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of the following principles, as follows:

*Umoja (Unity): To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
*Kujichagulia (Self- Determination): To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves.
*Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers' and sisters' problems our problems, and to solve them together.
*Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together.
*Nia (Purpose): To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
*Kuumba (Creativity): To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
*Imani (Faith): To believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

Although Kwanzaa honors African heritage, in my opinion, its principals are traditions that should be followed by all cultures year round. Kwanzaa is observed from December 26 to January 1st.

Important Dates
December brings many exciting activities to BFE. Plan to take the walking tour of City Park’s Celebration in the Oaks at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, 12/7 and see all of our marching units, cheerleaders, majorettes, dance and drill team and also our BFE school tree. Students taking pictures with Santa on 12/8 can wear their holiday attire! Even with the excitement of the upcoming holidays, our students must focus on second quarter exams December 13 – 21st as the end of the quarter is December 22nd.
