February Edition 2016

Charlotte L. Matthew, M.Ed., Principal

Dr. Ramona J. Perkins, A.P.

Principal’s Message

Most of the students know that "love" is my favorite word. I believe that love and the resulting peace that comes from love can solve just about any problem. In this month of love, as we celebrate Black History, make a commitment to yourself and your family to show love to others and be more tolerant of others’ differences. If everyone in our world acted as peacemakers, our world would be a much better place. We can’t control the world, but we can control ourselves. Let’s start with each person. A person can influence their family, a family can influence the community, the community can influence the nation, and the nation can influence the world. Let’s start and end our day with tolerance and love.

February is also Heart Health Month. You can show someone how much you love them by caring for your health and taking a few preventive health measures. Remember the old adage; an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Another thing you can do to show love for your children is to get them to school on time. Tardiness is a problem for the office, the teachers, and most importantly the tardy child. Children who come to school late or leave early miss out on valuable instructional time.

Thank you for sending your child to our wonderful school. We love our students and their families and want the very best for our school community.

Bus Behavior It is very critical that parents reinforce with their children proper behavior on the school bus. All of our busses have cameras not monitors. It is unsafe for a driver to discipline students while the bus is in motion, so the driver has to pull over to address discipline concerns. Our students are to be in their assigned seat, seated properly, and quiet. Please review the Transportation Policy, as students who do not comply with bus rules will lose the privilege of riding the bus.

As I am on the topic of behavior, please reinforce with your child the importance of being on their very best Benjamin Franklin behavior EVERY day at school as well.

Urban League EXPO For the past 10 years Benjamin Franklin Elementary has participated in the Urban League of Greater New Orleans’ School EXPO. This year it is again at the Superdome. Come check out your school’s table, Saturday, February 13th from 10 am until 2 pm. Parents may receive uniform vouchers, backpacks, and school supplies.

Dillard University Saturday STEM Academy All students in grades 2 – 8 may apply for special classes in Science, Math, Computer Science and Creative Expression.
