October Parent Power News 2013

Be a Part of the Plan!
October is always a very busy month at school.   It is the end of the first quarter, so students should be readying for their first quarter exams. Please note the exam schedule on the calendar.
Our school is beginning an Anti-Bullying program and the teachers will have OLWAS Bully Training on our second all day Professional Development Day, October 18th.
We again received rave reviews for our Grandparents Day! Thank you to all who came and who assisted in making our Grandparents feel extra special!! Our Come Play with the Bears Community Play Day was also loads of fun. Thank you to our Dads who helped set up for the event, the staff who came out to assist and play in the band, our cheerleaders and majorettes, Home Depot, Mr. Gibson who brought out Big Chief, School Board President Ira Thomas who installed our Student Council Officers, Mr. Jimmie McGee for organizing our amazing band, and Tulane’s community service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega.

First Quarter Report Card Conferences
Tuesday, October 22, 2013 from 4:00 – 6:00 will be our first quarter report card distribution day. Teachers will request conferences with parents of struggling students or students who have an academic or behavioral concern. All other students will have their report card sent home. If you do not get scheduled for a conference and you would like to meet with the teacher, please email the teacher requesting a conference.

Classroom Interruptions
It is vitally important that we keep our classroom interruptions to a minimum. This is why we ask parents to send us a note if a child needs to be checked out early for a doctor’s appointment or other legitimate reason. Then the teacher is aware at the beginning of the day that a student will be leaving early.   Showing up at the end of the day and expecting your child to be able to leave right away is not fair to your child or to the classmates and teacher we are interrupting. Please refrain from other sources of interruptions such as students who are tardy to school, parents calling with messages for students, or parents going to a classroom during instructional time. Thank you!

Student Code of Conduct
Please review the discipline policy that accompanies this Parent Power Newsletter with your child.  Parents need to reinforce what the consequences are for discipline infractions. Please review our procedures for Class I Behaviors and also discuss Suspendable and Expellable offenses to inform your child of the consequences of those behaviors.
