Changing with the Changes
We are in countdown mode for the PARCC tests. Our fourth and eighth grade students are attending tutoring every Monday and Wednesday in the afternoon. We will be sending out notification about Saturday School that will begin February 21st. Our teachers are reviewing the format of the new tests with the students. There is a dramatic shift in the way the test is written, the content of the test, and the way students are expected to respond. Nationally, there is an expected dip in scores because of the increased difficulty of the test and the test format. While we may experience a dip, we are preparing our students to do their very best. In order for us to achieve that goal, we need to minimize classroom interruptions. Common Core Standards need to be addressed and there is still much to accomplish before the testing period. Not only do the students need to focus on content, they need test taking skills with the new format. Students need to be extremely focused on what each question on the test is asking them to do. Many questions will require the students to go through two or more steps to determine the correct answer to a problem. Also, the students will be required to bubble in multiple correct answers to a question, and if the student does not bubble in all of the correct answers, no partial credit will be given.
I have always protected the instructional time from interruptions. We do not use our PA system during the school day to make “All Calls” disturbing the whole school, unless there is a real emergency. The office staff does call individual classrooms to notify teachers when a parent calls with a message or when a parent is checking a child out early. This has become a major distraction during instructional time and I am instructing the office staff to discontinue this practice. This will require some preplanning on the part of our parents. If you are planning to check your child out early from school, you must send a note in the morning to the homeroom teacher, who will convey that information to the office. The teacher will then have the child ready at the designated time on the note to be picked up by the parent. That way the teacher does not have to unexpectedly stop teaching, get assignments and information for the student and interrupt the instructional process for the rest of the classroom.   We must all work together to make the changes that are happening instructionally and test wise easier for our students. I am hopeful that all of our parents cooperate as we must change with the changes.
