April 2015 Parent Power News

April 2015

From your child’s principal, Ms. Matthew
One of the hallmarks of Benjamin Franklin Elementary Mathematics and Science School is our positive school culture. We are a family environment insisting on common core values and an emphasis on the academic, social, and moral teachings to make our students the best they can be. Our environment is dependent on the support we get from home and the consistency of the school staff to fairly and firmly communicate our message. As we are in the fourth quarter, students have this last opportunity to maintain excellence or to improve their grades before the final grades are tabulated for the 2014-2015 school year. The end of the school year will be here before you know it. We are getting busier and busier as our school days are numbered. There are 19 instructional days in April and 14 in May. Please talk to your child about the importance of staying organized and on top of school assignments. The fourth quarter can make a big difference in a student’s yearly average. We have two testing periods coming up. One is the 3rd through 8th grade LEAP for Social Studies and Science. The other is the end of year PARCC test. These are both state tests. We have other important assessments: Reading Roots, DIBELS, Chapter and Unit Tests, SRI, and Performance Series to name a few. We are encouraging our students to do especially well on tests that give us critical data on individual students and school performance. Performance Series and other mandated tests help us determine the growth of individual and groups of students. The Performance Series tests are particularly important as we use them to plan for the next school year.    Please stress the importance of your child doing his or her very best so we can accurately assess our instructional program, monitor the progress of each student and plan for the 2015-2016 school year.

Too many of our students are coming to school tardy and getting picked up late. We need to address the issue of coming to school after the bell. When students come to school after the morning exercise, they have missed the opportunity to begin the day with a positive school focus.   If your child is one who is habitually tardy, maybe your household needs a morning makeover! Plan ahead to leave your home in enough time to get to school ON TIME!! Pack backpacks before bed. Lay out the school uniform complete with socks, shoes, and belt. Check the calendar to see if any special items are needed for class or if there are special events happening at school. Wake up before your children. Make morning routines a calm experience instead of a big rush. Being calm and prepared for the day will set a great example for your child. Post reminders for yourself and your children. You can probably name one or two things your child forgets regularly, such as his or her glasses. Have your child make a checklist to review before leaving home. Make one for yourself, too. If your child misses any part of the school day, he or she misses out!!

April and May are the months we begin to reflect on what has gone very well and what we would like to do differently next school year. Parental input is very important as we strive to meet the needs of every student academically and individually. Please plan to join us at our April PTO/Title I meeting April 7, 2015 at 5:30 in the Jefferson Campus cafeteria and give your input.   We have a new building planning committee which will report at the meeting. Please come out and be in the know as we plan for the future of our school.
